In 2003, the Cardinals received word from their team physician that Albert Pujols, the biggest force in the league from the right side of the plate, had ligament damage in his right elbow and his season was at risk of coming unwound. It would later be revealed that Pujols’ elbow injury was more severe than Chris Carpenter’s a few years later that, because Carpenter was a pitcher, required Tommy John surgery.
