The Cardinals are a little closer to getting their ace back. Right-hander Adam Wainwright faced hitters Wednesday for the first time since tearing his Achilles back in late April. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch provides the photo evidence:

It was a couple days earlier than expected, but since Adam Wainwright was scheduled to throw a bullpen session the St. Louis Cardinals sent a few batters up to the plate and made it a simulated game.

With just about every teammate and Cardinals staff member gathered on the field to watch, Adam Wainwright, for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in April, took the Busch Stadium mound on Wednesday to face a series of hitters.

Adam Wainwright returned to the mound at Busch Stadium Wednesday, throwing live batting practice to a handful of hitters. While he had thrown off a mound prior to the session, it was his first time facing batters since his Achilles injury in Milwaukee.
