As the Cardinals neared baseball’s trade deadline and waded through the humidity of speculation that annually fogs up July, they talked openly and privately about needing a way to propel the offense and protect a couple young starters. If they had both strength and depth anywhere it was out in the bullpen, where a rotating cast of relievers had the league’s best ERA, six pitchers with at least one save, promising young understudies, and two veterans eventually on the mend.
