The Cardinals had signed former All-Star outfielder Bobby Bonilla as bench strength for the 2001 season, and Bonilla did have an excellent spring training. But, at the end of it, the club placed him on the disabled list with a foot injury and brought back a 21-year-old, non-roster player who had been sent to Memphis a couple of days before.
