Hamels, however, was not sharp — nor was he supported by runs or good defense — in allowing eight hits and five runs over five innings. The shaky outing came just 5½ weeks before the trade deadline and with rumors of a deal beginning to gain steam. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who have long kept an eye on Hamels, had a high-ranking scout at the game. He did not see Hamels’ best, but the left-hander still has an outstanding track record and will be a difference-maker on whatever team chooses to deal for him.
