It is 15 springs ago, and Yogi Berra is taking me on a personal tour of his museum in Upper Montclair, N.J. The building is closed to the public on this particular day, so I have the place—and Yogi—all to myself. Talk about a plum newspaper assignment. We walk by the mitt the New York Yankees legend used to catch the only perfect game in World Series history, his three Most Valuable Player Awards and one of his game-worn, pinstriped, flannelled uniforms. We pause for a moment at a larger-than-life photograph of him about to tag a sliding Jackie Robinson. “He was out,” Yogi said, making the call by thrusting his right thumb emphatically into the air. “The umpire definitely blew that one. But I guess after all these years I should probably get over it.”
