It began on April 17, 1945. On that day, when Albert “Red” Schoendienst made his major league debut for the Cardinals, he went one for three, a triple to right, at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. As a left fielder, Schoendienst was charged with an error when he couldn’t hang on to a slicing liner off the top of his glove by lefthanded-batting Cubs star Phil Cavaretta.
