Before Yadier Alvares left Cuba, only the most plugged-in people to the Cuban baseball scene knew who he was, or that he even existed. He had never pitched outside of Cuba, even for the junior national team. He walked 35 batters in 31 innings in Cuba’s national 18U league. He had never pitched in Serie Nacional.
