When teams sign international amateur players, they do the majority of their spending in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. While the job is similar in each country, signing Venezuelan players presents a unique challenge for major league teams. Most clubs don’t have academies in Venezuela, where the talent is spread out over a larger area than the Dominican Republic, and American scouts especially have to take caution when they travel.
