An unusually late split-squad game comes at just the right time for the Cardinals to continue their fifth-starter competition or at least prepare a starter in case Jaime Garcia has any setback on his way to the rotation.

In what could be yet another sign that lefty Jaime Garcia is on track to open up the season in the starting rotation, Mike Matheny revealed the next assignments for his closest competitors. Carlos Martinez - long considered to be the favorite to win that open spot vacated by Shelby Miller - will start the road game of the split-squad on Friday against the Nationals. Marco Gonzales will once again piggyback, this time on Saturday after Lance Lynn versus the Tigers.
