Mike Matheny Will Give His No.22 To Jason Heyward; Chris Carpenter Steps Aside; Shares Awarded; Dan Kantrovitz To Athletics

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who has only worn one number since accepting his role with the club, offered No. 22 to newcomer Jason Heyward, but not because of how long the outfielder had worn it or what the outfielder is expected to bring to the club.

Chris Carpenter, the last Cardinal to win the Cy Young Award, told his hometown paper that he intends to step back from his role with the organization for the next season. Carpenter retired after the 2013 season and he accepted a role as a special assistant to general manager John Mozeliak. He had the title, but his role, the team said, would evolve and define itself over time. Carpenter did not have much of a presence with the major-league team this past season, though he did make visits to the minor-league affiliates to talk with prospects.

New Cardinals right fielder Jason Heyward didn't make the request, but manager Mike Matheny didn't feel he needed to wait for one. What better way to welcome Heyward into the organization, Matheny thought, than to initiate a potential jersey swap himself.
