Mike Matheny Finishes Fourth In National League 2014 Manager Of The Year Voting

It was August when I found out I would be getting one of the Baseball Writers' Association of America's 30 votes for NL Manager of the Year. I figured this would be an easy call. Facing just as many obstacles as any manager, Ron Roenicke had kept the Brewers in first place virtually all season a year after they finished 14 games under .500. Without a doubt, he deserved my first-place vote.

Clint Hurdle managed the 2014 Pirates back into the postseason, but not even that feat could lead to an even rarer feat -- consecutive National League Manager of the Year Awards.

In three seasons as the manager of the Cardinals, Mike Matheny has two division titles, three playoff berths, and three consecutive appearances in the National League championship series.

It was obvious when he was not announced as one of the three finalists last week that despite leading the St. Louis Cardinals to the National League Championship Series for the third time in as many seasons, Mike Matheny would not win BBWAA’s NL Manager of the Year award.
