Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said he has been told by the club's medical team that Molina was "not going to hurt himself worse with this. There's a significant injury there, but it's just going to be dealing with the pain and if he can do the different movements we need him to make."

As expected, Yadier Molina will not be in the Cardinal lineup for Game 3 of the NLCS. A.J. Pierzynski will get the start, catching familiar battery mate John Lackey.

It’s not much of a surprise, but now it is official: Yadier Molina will not start Game 3. Despite Molina’s insistence on Monday that he will play again this postseason, the reality is that he is dealing with an injury that rarely goes away in 48 hours. For that (and other reasons), it made too much sense not to go with A.J. Pierzynski behind the plate.

As expected, A.J. Pierzynski will start at catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the NLCS–but Yadier Molina remains available as a possible defensive replacement if needed.
