Worst September Collapses For Every National League Team: Cardinals, 1973

The 1973 season was a strange one for the Cardinals. They opened the year by losing 12 of their first 13 games, but clawed their way into first place and stayed there all of August. After games on Sept. 5, the Cardinals owned a one-game lead in the NL East, despite the fact they were only four games over .500. But they were swept at Wrigley Field by the rival Cubs, starting a slide that netted 13 losses in 17 games and cost them the playoffs.
