The Boston Red Sox traded away No. 2 starter John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 31, hours before the MLB non-waiver trade deadline. Set to make the major league minimum of $500,000 in 2015, it was widely expected that Lackey wasn’t going to accept that pact quietly, despite having agreed to that term of his contract when he signed with Boston prior to the 2010 season. He stated that if he missed a season (as he did in 2012), he would be forced to pitch the final year of his contract at league minimum.
