Most of the Cardinals had gathered in the main room of the visitors' clubhouse here at Chase Field to watch the Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds plunge into extra innings. The game, tied 6-6, teetered in the late innings, and they watched -- oooooohing, awwwwing, and needling each other with every pitch -- as former teammate John Axford loaded the bases and the Reds came one swing away from a win.

The St. Louis Cardinals can clinch the National League Central division title as soon as this evening as the “Magic Number” has dropped to 1 as the Pittsburgh Pirates lost earlier in the day as Ramon Santiago delivered a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning for Cincinnati to win 10-6.
