With utility infielder Daniel Descalso cast in a more limited role than he ever has been in his career, manager Mike Matheny has talked to him and others on the bench about reconsidering how they grade their contributions. Their batting average can be an eyesore, their production thin, but if they provide a strong, deep at-bat they’ve helped.
