The excitement of being selected in the MLB Draft can often make a quick fan of any player chosen by an organization, but for Luke Weaver–who was selected 17th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals, he had been hoping to be selected by the team prior to Thursday night.

With their first selection of the 2014 MLB Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals selected right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver out of Florida State. Listed at 6’2, 170lbs, Weaver started 16 games for the Seminoles this season finishing 8-4 with a 2.62 ERA. He threw a pair of complete games and went 106.1 innings, striking out 85 and walking 23.

Florida State's Luke Weaver was selected with the 27th overall pick in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft. The announcement came from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig Thursday evening inside Studio 42 at the MLB Network in Secaucus, N.J.
