Three months ago these Cardinals were asked to pose for Valhalla. They were conceded an extravagance of power pitching and the National League’s longest lineup. If Marichal stopped them, then they would take down Koufax and Bunning. Clemente might have cracked the lineup, at least until Oscar Taveras was ready. Mike Matheny represented a new wave of admittedly inexperienced but certainly high-ceiling managers whose leadership trumped any tactical learning curve.
