By refusing to overpay to keep Albert Pujols, Mozeliak maintained the Cardinals’ payroll flexibility for years to come, a decision taken with the knowledge that the organizational pipeline that has kept St. Louis so good for so long is very much intact. Very much a disciple of Branch Rickey’s theory about trading a player a year too soon rather than a year too late, as shown last winter with David Freese, Mozeliak manages to combine a stat-friendly attitude with the tradition of The Cardinal Way.
