The Cincinnati Reds thought they were rid of Chris Carpenter. More accurately, they desperately hoped they’d seen the last of him. Carpenter, after all, dusted the Cardinals’ most persistent divisional rival for a 14-5 record and 2.55 ERA in 24 career games. He struck out 153 Reds against 30 walks. He allowed them less than a baserunner per inning. At times, he literally fought them.
