Save for two relief appearances in the majors, Rob Johnson had spent his entire pro career as a catcher, logging a combined 265 games for the Mariners, Padres, Mets and Cardinals and batting .200/.275/.295. Now he’ll try to make a Padres affiliate as a relief pitcher, with his most recent mound work coming for St. Louis last Aug. 7 with a four-pitch strikeout to end a blowout loss to the Dodgers.
