Mike Matheny’s introductory press conference as Cardinals manager lasted almost an hour, mostly due to an avalanche of questions that rolled over the former Gold Glove catcher, general manager John Mozeliak and chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. regarding the new man’s abbreviated resumé, the process that discarded two-time World Series manager Terry Francona, and what it all meant. There was even a query (blush) about whether Matheny had slipped the post-concussion syndrome that ended his playing career.
