Mike Matheny sat in the visiting-team manager’s office, as happy as he’d been all season. Ecstatic. Relieved. Proud. “Wow,” Matheny said — once, twice, maybe three times. To quote from the old song written by Al Green, you could take him to the river, and drop him in the water. Put Matheny in the cold Allegheny outside PNC Park, and wash him down. After winning 2-1 Monday, the Cardinals were saved. They have new life in the National League division series. And it feels good to be so alive.
