Albert Pujols & Robinson Cano
Robinson Cano asked the Yankees for 10 years, $300 million and the Yankees said no. To me, the apt comparison is not Alex Rodriguez‘s contract, but Albert Pujols. Both hit the free agent market at the same age, right after their seasonal-age 31 season. I would argue that Pujols was the more impressive player at the time of his freedom. Albert had been born fully formed out of the head of Zeus, and from his earliest days in the majors posted god-like numbers. By the time he became a free agent, he reached or exceeded seven WAR nine times.
