As the July 31 deadline for trading without waivers approaches, the Phillies are caught in the middle as as far as being buyers or sellers. They are under .500 at 49-50 but before Monday they were only 6½ games out first place in the National League Eastern Division. The Phils are without several components, including first baseman Ryan Howard, recovering from left knee surgery, and center fielder Ben Revere, who has a broken right foot. Righthander Roy Halladay, who had shoulder surgery in May, has begun a throwing program but won’t be back for at least a month.
