Following a late-night bus ride from Philadelphia, the Cardinals arrived in Washington DC at about 3 a.m. ET. Since then, there have been a pair of injury issues that have cropped up. Manager Mike Matheny kept Carlos Beltran out of the original lineup on Monday after Beltran alerted him to some back tightness on Sunday. Fortunately, Beltran showed up at Nationals Park feeling better than expected; it was news the Cardinals welcomed, especially when they then learned that Matt Adams felt tightness in his right oblique while taking swings in the batting cage during early work.
Matt Carpenter is back in the lead-off spot for the St. Louis Cardinals tonight as they begin a three game series with the Washington Nationals.
