Bill Bergesch, who served as one of George Steinbrenner's de facto general managers for the Yankees from 1978-84 when the Boss was at his manic worst, passed away at age 89 at a nursing home in Stamford, Conn., last Tuesday. Bergesch spent a half-century in baseball as a scout and executive and undoubtedly would've wanted to be most remembered as the scout who signed Bob Gibson for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967.
