With every game, the Cardinals get a little bit closer to finalizing their regular-season bullpen, by necessity even if not by choice. Take Thursday, for example, when two of the apparent candidates turned in contrasting performances.
New York Mets starter Chris Capuano is the first of three lefties the Cardinals will face in the next four days, according to the opponents' announced starter. That gives manager Tony La Russa a chance to run out his lefty-ready lineup, but also pit Skip Schumaker and Lance Berkman, two candidates for platoon subs, against the lefties before the regular season begins.
