The John Fulgham Riddle

It took St. Louis Cardinals pitcher John Fulgham three pitches to get three outs in the first inning. He did not fall behind in the count against a single batter in nine innings. He had five three-pitch innings. In Fulgham's 39-pitch shutout back in 1979, the only hitters who saw a second pitch also saw a third pitch because that's how many it takes to strike out.
