Jim Edmonds Leaves Game With Strained Right Oblique, Russ Springer Has Season-Ending Surgery

Jim Edmonds strained his right oblique in his side swinging the bat in the sixth inning.

The news wasn't as optimistic for the 40-year-old Edmonds, who was acquired in a trade with the Brewers on Aug. 9.

"That doesn't look very good at all," Baker said. "We have six outfielders, which you usually don't carry. Usually something always takes care of itself. You don't like it in this manner. But we'll probably have to put him on the DL."

A spot on the 40-man roster should open up after it was learned Monday night that reliever Russ Springer will need surgery to repair a herniated disc and will miss six to eight weeks. Springer was already on the 15-day DL with a hip injury.
