DG's 10@10: Going The Distance

Not too long after Busch Stadium III opened in downtown St. Louis at the start of the 2006 season, a couple club employees -- armed with meter sticks, measuring tape, a calculator and their own ingenuity -- went around the ballpark to construct a way to best estimate the distance of home runs. They came up with a grid that offered about three different values for each section of the ballpark. Right down to the row, they could then identify the distance traveled and judging by the way the ball arrived (liner, sky-high shot, normal parabola) they could offer a reasonable estimate.
