The Cardinals, sputtering along at 16-21 since May 5, are clearly underachieving. Sure, we can blame part of the slide on injuries and a starting rotation that's deteriorated on the back end. Yes, we can rationalize this extended slump by pointing out that they're only 1 1/2 games out of first place in the pliable NL Central.
