The Cardinals took Arizona State’s No. 1 starter, Seth Blair, as one of their top three picks in the first round/compensation round on the first night of the baseball first-year draft. And today they have followed by taking the Sun Devils’ closer, righthander Jordan Swagerty, in the second round.

The Cardinals took a 17-year-old California high school shortstop as their third-round pick today in baseball’s first-year player draft. But Sam Tuivailala of Aragon High in San Mateo, Calif., also pitches.

University of Missouri catcher-infielder Brett Nicholas, a .352 hitter with 12 homers and 64 runs batted in this year, went to Texas in the sixth round of the baseball draft today. Missouri State lefthander Mike Kickham, 4-9 with a 5.15 earned run average, was chosen later in that round by San Francisco.

Outfielder Austin Wilson, considered one of the most multi-talented players in baseball’s first-year player draft, lasted until the 12th round before the Cardinals chose him today. The reason is that Wilson seems very committed to attending Stanford.
