Edgar Renteria Stays Hot!

Currently, Renteria's hitting inspires such incredulity. Unable to drive pitches last year while playing with sore shoulders and bone chips in his right elbow, Renteria entered the game batting a Major League-high .727, a figure which plummeted all the way to .688 after his 3-for-5 afternoon.

Renteria should have left the clubhouse with a stooped posture after picking the Giants up all day. He managed the only hit off Hudson through six innings, doubled during San Francisco's two-run seventh and, one out after Eugenio Velez doubled off Wagner to open the ninth, drove a 1-2 slider into the left-field seats.

"The guy throws 98, 99 [mph] -- you're prepared for him to throw you a fastball," Renteria said. "That's what I was looking for. I was surprised he threw the slider there."

That career-low .250 average Renteria recorded in 2009 is receding farther into the past seemingly each day.

"Edgar has been the man so far," Giants left fielder Mark DeRosa said. "The guy has had a hell of a career for a reason. He knows what he's doing."
