Kyle McClellan will move to the bullpen today for this afternoon’s game against the Minnesota Twins. As reported in this morning’s Post-Dispatch, the St. Louis Cardinals were discussing the move Sunday and were hesitant to make it official until letting the player know.

The drawn out process of announcing a fifth starter is over. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa all but confirmed this morning that Jaime Garcia will open the season in the rotation and that Kyle McClellan will relocate to the bullpen, where he will be one of several arms considered for the vital righthanded set-up role.

With the way Jaime Garcia has pitched this spring and the Cardinals need for a late-inning reliever, McClellan was not surprised when informed Monday morning that he was no longer in competition for the fifth starter and instead will open the season in the bullpen.
