Back before the 2003 season, Kiko Calero was thinking his chance with the Cardinals might be his last in baseball. He had pitched well in the Royals' system, but it had taken him six years to crack Triple-A. When he went to spring camp with the Cards, he told his wife, "Hey, baby, if I don't reach the big leagues this time, I'm coming home to finish college."
