Joe Mauer signed an 8-year, $184 million deal with the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The deal comes on the heels of Mauer’s first AL MVP award, and simultaneously kills two schools of thought once thought inevitable: the small-market Twins would never be able to afford such a contract, and the bidding wars from the New Yorks and Bostons and L.A.s of the league would be mind-blowing.
