The St. Louis Cardinals optioned righthanded reliever Josh Kinney to Triple-A Memphis this morning. Kinney had his spring slowed by a discomfort in his shoulder that required an anti-inflammatory shot and kept him out of games for a week. Kinney spent most of last season with Memphis, and he his quest to return to the majors as a regular, like he was in 2006, has been complicated by two significant arm injuries, a surgery and the inconsistent pitching that followed. The Cardinals have scratched Brad Penny as their scheduled starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Braves.
