The white, concrete monolith just past Field No. 1 here on the St. Louis Cardinals’ side of Roger Dean Stadium is nothing more than a prop for defense. Standing in front of it, pitchers are tested with a salvo of special baseballs — “ragballs,” as coach Dennis Martinez said — that are soft enough to avoid bruises and spongy enough to provide a fielding challenge.
