Sept. 11 was designated for the first time as an official day of remembrance and service. Major League Baseball embraced the service element in various ways -- like announcing the donation of up to one million tickets to deserving individuals and its leading role in the "I Participate" volunteer campaign -- and then conducted solemn remembrances at every home ballpark.
