Javier Vazquez faces Chris Carpenter as the latter tries to solidify his NL ERA lead and a possible Cy Young award. Vaquez pitched well but gave up five runs against St. Louis in his only other start against the team this year. He walked one and struck out eight, but allowed five runs in eight innings. Carpenter has not lost since the All-Star break, posting a 1.84 ERA in that time.
