Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-4-09: Jim Riggleman The Interim MGR; Ronnie Belliard Debuts For Dodgers; Chris Perez Extends Streak; Joe Nelson Heads To Minors

Never mind that the Astros exercised manager Cecil Cooper's option for 2010 in April. Cooper is almost certain to be fired, major-league sources say, and several of his coaches also are in jeopardy.

He has become the man who is asked to land the jet airliner safely and with minimal damage when the pilot is stricken in flight. The "In Case of Emergency" guy.

Brett Tomko (Athletics):
Tomko, who beat the Yankees in his first start, topped the Tigers in his second and left his third with a five-run lead against the Angels, saw his ERA with the A's jump from 1.62 to 4.40 in 5 2/3 innings.

Clayton Mortensen & Brett Wallace (Athletics):
Acquired in the July trade that sent Matt Holliday to the Cardinals, Mortensen is making a spot start in place of rookie right-hander Vin Mazzaro, who has been temporarily shut down with shoulder tendinitis. Mortensen, a 24-year-old who has a 9-8 record with a 4.39 ERA in 23 starts at Triple-A this season, made his A's debut on Aug. 8 against the Royals and allowed eight runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings. He was sent back down after the outing.

Brett Wallace, acquired in the Matt Holliday trade with the Cardinals, went 2-for-3 as Triple-A Sacramento's designated hitter on Wednesday to raise his batting average to .302 in 39 games with the River Cats.

Ronnie Belliard (Dodgers):
The Dodgers overcame their first deficit with Belliard's two-out, broken-bat RBI single that scored James Loney in the second. Ramirez homered leading off the forth to negate Drew's home run and the Dodgers took the lead later that inning when Casey Blake doubled (one of three hits), tagged to third on Loney's flyout and was singled home by Belliard, who drove in the final run with a bases-loaded, fielder's-choice grounder as Loney slid hard into second base breaking up the double play.

Chris Perez (Indians):
Chris Perez kept the good job going by working a perfect eighth and ninth to extend his scoreless innings streak to 20.
