Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-6-09: Brett Tomko Signs Deal; Aaron Miles Activated; Scott Rolen 1st Reds HR; Mike Timlin Moving Up

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
Clearly, Branyan has the most to offer a team right now. He's a guy with 24 home runs and a lefty slugger making only a few hundred grand the rest of the season.

Which is why I think he has no chance of moving on.

Brett Tomko (Athletics):
In a move that went unannounced by the club, the A's on Monday signed right-hander Brett Tomko to a Minor League contract. On Wednesday, he reported to Triple-A Sacramento.

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
Adam Kennedy's tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning on Wednesday was the fourth and most significant long ball of the night for the A's.

Braden Looper (Brewers):
There was no stampede of players this time. That did not surprise Looper (10-5), who allowed only one run on four hits in 6 2/3 quality innings.

Scott Rolen (Reds):
Back in the lineup for the first time following a beaning that put him out for two games, Scott Rolen slugged his first pitch from Rich Harden for a two-run homer to left field. It was Rolen's first long ball and first hit in seven at-bats for Cincinnati since his Friday trade from the Blue Jays for three players.

Despite the frantic trading deadline already just about a week over, people continue to express their bafflement at the Cincinnati Reds' trade of 3B Edwin Encarnacion and minor league hurlers Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart to the Toronto Blue Jays for 3B Scott Rolen.
The Hardball Times

Mike Timlin (Rockies):
Reassigned from Rookie-Level Casper to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Jess Todd (Indians):
The player to be named later now is a Cleveland Indian.

The Indians called up right-handed reliever Jess Todd — the final piece in the Mark DeRosa trade with the Cardinals — from Triple-A Columbus before Wednesday night’s game against the Twins at Progressive Field.
