The following June in Hoboken, N.J., the Knickerbockers played the New York Baseball Club in the first recorded game using those rules. But historians still debate over the earliest traces of baseball. Fossils have been found in other New England towns and hamlets, places in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, residue dating to the 1820s.
