The AL official indicated that Lugo has been working out at the Mets’ complex in the Dominican Republic. The person predicted that once Lugo clears waivers, he’ll be signed by the Mets. Lugo, 33, looked awful at shortstop in a series against the Mets at Fenway Park. He hit .284 with one homer and eight RBI in 109 at-bats for the Red Sox this season. Lugo has roughly $13.5 million remaining on his original four-year deal with Boston, so the Mets must wait until he is a free agent — as was the case with the Sheffield signing — in order to be responsible only for a prorated portion of the major-league minimum salary of $400,000.
