The Cubs trail the Cardinals by 3 1/2 games as the teams open a three-game series in Chicago leading up to the All-Star break. Chris Carpenter faces a struggling Rich Harden. Carpenter does not trade hits for walks. Opponents bat just .193 against him with a .228 OBA. Harden’s 15 home runs allowed this year are one away from a career high. He allowed 16 in 189 2/3 innings in 2004. He’s only pitched 69 innings this season.
