College of Charleston junior third baseman Joey Bergman, who was drafted in the 22nd round by the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, has decided to return for his senior season, the Jacksonville, Fla. native announced on Friday.
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to come back and earn my degree from the College of Charleston," said Bergman, who is one of 28 Charleston players drafted over the past five seasons. "It was an honor to be drafted, but this is the best decision for me, my family and my teammates. I'm looking forward to my final season as a Cougar."
Bergman was named the 2009 Southern Conference Player of the Year and third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Bergman is second in the nation with a .452 batting average and leads the country with 88 runs scored. Bergman added 15 homers and 57 RBIs. He was 24-26 in stolen bases and led the Cougars with 25 doubles.
