Who's On Third? Cardinals Don't Know

Every team has a pitching rotation. In the early part of the 2009 season, the Cardinals have a third-base rotation as well. In the season's first three games, three different players will start at the hot corner for St. Louis, and at least one more could get the call there in the next week or two.

The St. Louis Cardinals will have their second different starting third baseman in two games tonight when lefthanded-hitting Joe Thurston bats eighth against Pittsburgh righthander Ian Snell and they’ll have a third on Wednesday when St. Louisan David Freese, a righthanded batter, makes his first big-league start at third base against Pirates lefthander Zach Duke. Brian Barden started Monday’s game at third.
