The New York Mets paid $1.7 million to bring back Fernando Tatis as their righty-hitting jack-of-all-trades. That payday suggested that the Mets strongly believed that Tatis' Comeback Player of the Year 2008 was no mirage. But the signing of Gary Sheffield and the incredibly sparse play of Tatis so far this year suggests that the faith really was not that strong toward Tatis. He now feels a bit like a $1.7 million sacrifice. It is interesting that the Mets have so willingly created playing time issues around Tatis and Ryan Church for a fading 40-year-old with bad shoulders and a history of bad behavior.
